Third-quarter earnings season kicks off with Dow-component Alcoa. For companies in the S&P 500, expectations are low.
* Companies on the S&P are expected to show an overall earnings decline of almost 25 percent, according to Thomson Reuters research. Reporting on Wednesday are Alcoa, Monsanto, Family Dollar Stores and Costco.
* Spanish bank Santander’s spinoff of part of its Brazilian unit, the biggest IPO in the world so far this year, debuts on the New York and the Sao Paulo exchanges.
General Motors CEO Fritz Henderson will provide a business update via conference call.
* At the Reuters Global Wealth Management Summit expect interviews with UBS Managing Director and Head of Products and Services for Asia Pacific Michael Benz, UniCredit Private Banking CEO Dario Prunotto and JP Morgan Private Bank Managing Director Pablo Garnica.
